Back then, the TV drama "Besieged City" and "Debt" set off a crowded viewing craze, which is still a talk of old Shanghai people. After filming a new film, directors often took the work to the university campus for test screening and discussion, and listened to the opinions of college students. Zhang Yimou's "Red Sorghum", Bai Shen's "Falling Mountain Wind", and Teng Wenji's "Yellow River Ballad" all tried the water at Fudan before going abroad to compete.

At the end of October 1991, I was in charge of the Fudan Film Critics Association. With the support of Shanghai Film Studio, I had my first encounter with director Huang Shuqin. I remember that it was at the Air Force Political Academy in Wujiaochang, Jiangwan. It was the first time I saw director Huang Shuqin. She was very tired just after filming "Besieged City".
At that time, "Besieged City" was a hit before it was released, and it was well received in the circle, but director Huang Shuqin was very low-key, and repeatedly urged: Please don't expect too much, and ask your classmates to give more opinions and less praise. She wrote me a roadmap and went to the film and television department of the Shanghai Film Studio to borrow a sample of the TV series.
In that era when there was no Internet or even CD-ROMs, the transmission medium of film and television works was video tapes. At the Shanghai Film Studio, I saw the black box of "Besieged City". It was a heavy package of ten videotapes. I took off my coat, carefully wrapped them, tied them to the back seat of my bicycle, and traveled through most of Shanghai. , ride from Caoxi North Road to Handan Road in one breath.
"Besieged City" caused a sensation in Fudan, no less than the Asian college debate competition at that time. Beginning on November 5, the screening of "Besieged City" lasted for three days. The 10-episode drama was broadcast to the students for free at the rhythm of 4 episodes per night, igniting the enthusiasm of the students.
The only two electrified classrooms 5102 and 5104 in the liberal arts building opposite the Fudan campus were packed. One hour before the screening, outside the classrooms, on the steps and even on the windowsills were crowded with students.

In order to prevent accidents, on the last day, the audio-visual education center had to open an hour earlier. The atmosphere during the screening was even hotter. The students were deeply attracted by the script and performance of "Besieged City". During the three-hour screening, the audience laughed and cheered for more than one minute 33 times. Today, it seems that such a scene It's not like watching TV, the atmosphere is more like a concert.
After the screening every night, the students continued to gather at the east gate, chatting around the fireplace, which made the food stall owners on Guoding Road also excited for several days. When I told Director Huang about the grand opening of the premiere and invited her to come to Fudan, she was also very happy. Despite the doctor's obstruction, she came to Fudan in a wheelchair to have a discussion with her classmates.
