The TV series "All About Doctor Tang" ended recently. This TV series, featuring a cardiac surgeon as the protagonist, describes the daily life and work of the doctor's profession in a very detailed and in-depth manner. Looking at the resume of the screenwriter Prince, the undergraduate degree of Wuhan University's Department of Clinical Medicine, the understanding of the medical industry, which is rarely seen in domestic medical dramas, seems to have the answer.
However, after graduating, the prince is not a film and television major, so naturally he has no contacts in the industry, and no one takes him into the industry. The prince searches the Internet and participates in any script competitions. He has paid the rent for a few years with the bonuses of these competitions. , "Anyway, somehow I survived." After becoming a screenwriter, the prince "sighed", the screenwriter didn't seem to have to go to work, "Actually, I work every day, and I don't have any vacations, so it's counted as a 'thief ship'."
Although away from the usual career path of a medical student, Prince remains focused on the medical profession. In 2019, she saw an article about how Fuwai Hospital used humanitarian exemption to implant three patients with domestic artificial hearts that were still in the research and development stage. The prince decided to write a story about heart surgery, and that's where "All About Dr. Tang".
Such a creative method is in line with the creative logic of medical industry dramas, but in the current creative environment, it is rare. After all, audiences are accustomed to many dramas in the name of medical treatment, but they are actually dating. However, as a medical student, Prince expressed his understanding: the threshold for medical drama creation is unavoidable. "Because if you haven't studied medicine, you will definitely not be able to understand many things by self-studying, including when I have studied medicine, I will go to see some incurable diseases outside the heart. I know, but I don't know what I'm talking about."
In the conversation with the prince, I can see a former medical student, thinking about the profession of a doctor, and also a young screenwriter, how to complete the persistence and compromise of self-expression in a relatively limited industry space. For the creation of current medical dramas and even workplace dramas, there is something worth referring to.

Tang Jiayu has no prototype
The Paper : First of all, I want to talk about the character Tang Jiayu, the heroine. Does she have a prototype in real life?
My positioning of this character is a woman in the workplace who is both strong and vulnerable. In many workplace dramas, women are subordinates, and then there is a particularly powerful male leader, who may still be the male lead. The female lead grows up under the guidance of the male leader, and has a good harvest in career and love. I just want to say that I have lived half my life. Nothing like this has ever happened to me. So instead, I wanted to write about a woman who is very powerful. She will lead a group of men, and this woman is not a woman or a strong woman. She also has many weaknesses, but she loves her job very much.
The Paper: The group portraits of doctors in the play are also quite interesting. Would you like to hear about the creative process?
The characters' personalities also diverge from the heroine, such as Tang Jiayu and Ouyang Zhenyu, they are two sides of the same body, and even from individual perspectives, they are the same person, and "self" must be pleasing to the eye , they will definitely become friends. Ye Yiming is just the opposite. Those advantages in his character are exactly what Tang Jiayu does not have. People are easily attracted when they see what they lack, so they can develop emotionally.
Prince: No one has mentioned that the heroine is not likable enough, because we all think that the heroine is super likable. In fact, she has many advantages, and her shortcomings are all innocuous. To be honest, the "gold finger" has been opened to the maximum.
But it is true that I heard some worries before, and thought that there would be too few emotional dramas, but later I found that it was too much, because each episode has a patient story, and then I have to write the patient's story and the doctor line. There is no room for a lot of emotional dramas, so I just write some of them on the spot. There is only so much space in the script, you can choose, do you want me to write about medical treatment or about love?
But I want to say a word for our Party A. The Party A I cooperated with this time, I think they are "darier" than me, they will think: We want a medical drama, you will let me write about your surgery, cases, etc., The creative freedom given is great.
Medical dramas should be able to face the problem head-on, but also give a relatively warm and bright outlet
The Paper: In the creation of medical dramas, the risk of censorship is also a challenge to face, such as the presentation of surgical scenes and the controversy over social topics. In this drama, I saw some issues such as doctor-patient conflicts and medical ethics. How do you control the creation?
Prince: I also want to compliment our producer. Starting from the outline of the story, the producer will help me control the risks in every step of the script. Every time I write an episode, I will show it to the producer, and then immediately Hear feedback. The producers are all very experienced, they will control, and we will avoid things that can't be written. But I think in fact, there is nothing that absolutely cannot be written, it depends on how you choose the angle of entry.
In real life, are there any bad things in the hospital? Of course, like all professions, the profession of a doctor will also face bad things, but medical care is about human life, so it must be more cautious, and it is easier to arouse the audience's discussion. TV dramas have great dissemination power. As a medical drama, whether to choose the dark side that cannot pass the trial at all, or choose to convey warm and positive things, I think I will still choose the latter. After watching our show, some viewers went to register as organ donation volunteers. After I learned about this, I was very moved. I hope to face the problem head on, but still give a relatively warm and bright exit.
Prince: I watched a lot of American medical dramas, and I also learned their writing style. Generally speaking, medical dramas, patients' cases and stories, will definitely have a counterattack on the doctor's emotions and events. Otherwise, the doctor is doing the doctor's business, and the patient is doing the patient's business. Everyone is only doing rounds. Convergence, it's not a medical drama in my opinion.
As for the unit drama, I think the unit drama is a good exercise for a new screenwriter or a less experienced screenwriter, because it is easy to write the same story as one episode, but you It's not easy to write this story into 30 episodes. In my opinion, I think that the whole drama tells one story is more difficult to write, and the unit drama is not difficult to write, because you can start over in the next episode, and each episode has a bright spot.
Of course, there are also difficulties in unit dramas, that is, the overall arrangement of troops. You now have 36 short stories. You have to write 36 episodes of script, which story to use at what stage, and when you list the initial big frame, you have to arrange it. Well, think about the ups and downs and structure of the entire play. For example, the grandfather Xue Zhenglun's heart and heart, which episode is the most suitable for you to arrange his death, you have to design it well, and where to place it can promote the plot to the greatest extent.
The Paper: Not from a professional background, how did you learn screenwriting?
Prince: I watch a lot of dramas. I basically only watch good dramas. Some people will say that you need to watch both good and bad dramas. If you watch bad dramas, you will know how to avoid that pit. I think it's best not to. Because time is limited, you should watch good dramas. If you think a drama is particularly good, you should watch it over and over again. Maybe the first time you watch it, just like an ordinary audience, go after it. The plot, but the second time, the third time and the Nth time, you will think in your mind: why did he write this paragraph like this, what purpose did he want to achieve, and why did he set it up like this. Immerse yourself in it, and there will be a feeling of dialogue with the screenwriter of the show, so that you will understand the screenwriter's intention subtly.
"Don't open the graveyard in your heart too early"
The Paper: I am very interested in the doctor's view of life and death presented in the play. They face the death of a patient, sad but rational, and then quickly devote themselves to the treatment of the next patient. This point, in fact, many domestic medical dramas are not particularly well presented.
Prince: First of all, when I was studying medicine, medical students were five years, three and a half years of classes, and the last year and a half to go to the hospital for an internship, but when you were an intern in the hospital, you were at the bottom of the "food chain", and it was difficult See what the real hospital is like. What affected me more was the time when I went to Anzhen Hospital.
The death of a patient is very painful. What should you do when the pain is over? There will be new patients tomorrow. And I saw some netizens say that doctors don’t drink alcohol or anything; no, some doctors I know drink alcohol anyway, but in moderation, as a way to relieve stress under great pressure, and they don’t delay work.
The Paper : The last sentence of Xue Zhenglun, the leader outside the drama center, before going to the operating table was, don't open the cemetery in your heart too early.
Prince: There is a source for this sentence. It is in a book about surgeons. I especially agree with this statement, it's really accurate. I interviewed a lot of doctors, their successful cases, they may not remember all of them, but the failed cases, especially the particularly tragic failure cases, each of them remembers. Surgeons not only need benevolence, but also have the ability to deal with the grief and frustration of failing to save patients. If you open up the "cemetery" in your heart every day to cherish the memory of those who have passed away, you may be afraid of the stage. may affect your work.
The Paper: The wife of the vice president in the play, as a housewife, faced some identity issues, and I also expressed some opinions on this in the play.
Prince: Many housewives are not as easy as professional women, but she does not take money, and their social identity may not be as high as professional women. Sometimes people tend to ignore them, or think about their lives as easy. I often see some friends around me who have given up their good career choices and families. They work very hard every day from morning to night. I think these efforts should be seen. Some people choose to achieve careers, and some people choose to have families. I think women should be allowed to choose independently, rather than outsiders to criticize and evaluate high and low scores.
The Paper: In fact, in the past few years, there have been some elitist routines and single-mindedness about female themes, and there are even some creative creations by big heroines that are particularly cool. What do you think?
I think it is a bit overkill, which may flatten the characters, because flesh and blood represent a gray area of human nature, and flaws mean that this person is definitely not perfect. If you write like this, there is a risk of not being accepted by the audience. In a business logic, there will be fewer people doing risky things, and everyone is willing to do risk-free things, just like buying funds, they are willing to buy capital guaranteed.
The Paper: In the play, the heroine faces her husband's derailment. It is a process of pain, escape, reluctance, reconciliation, and then complete separation. However, in this process, I saw that some viewers did not accept it, feeling "very weak" and "human". It's broken", what do you think?
Prince: Why does a woman have to divorce her husband immediately when she finds out that her husband is cheating, because she is weak without leaving her? The problems that everyone faces in reality are diverse, and individual emotions are also complex. There is a foreign drama "The Good Wife". After her husband cheated, the heroine has not divorced for seven seasons. Do you think she is not a "big heroine"? Isn't she a "strong woman"?
But it is really necessary to consider the audience's acceptance, because everyone is tired after a long day of get off work, and they don't want to be angry when they watch the TV series, they just want to be happy, which is understandable.
Screenwriters should not think about what the market needs
The Paper: In the context of the Internet, sometimes political correctness is higher than complex reality. The audience says they want to see realistic themes, but if they really want to show some aspects of reality, the market may not have such a high degree of acceptance. What do you think of reality? Doctrine themes?
Prince: When it comes to realistic themes, I think screenwriters should not think about what the market needs, but what you want to write, because a script takes at least a year to write, and the process is quite painful. If you don’t really want to The subject of writing, the process of writing will be more painful, you do not need to destroy yourself. If you want to write about realism, you should write about realism. If you want to write about fairy heroes, you should write about it. It’s right to choose what you want to write about. I think any subject can produce a good story, and only after a good story is written will people know whether it is good or not. What big data tells you is good, I don’t think I will refer to it anyway.
Then I personally don't agree with the kind of things that teach you how many days to become a screenwriter quickly, or teach you how to manage a network of screenwriters and how to deal with Party A. I think screenwriting is a technical job, and your brain is so limited. Just think about how to write the script and you’re done. If you think about the rest, it’s useless. Once the script is written, it’s possible that the rest will go smoothly. Just like an exam, you may not be able to guess the question correctly. If you guess wrong, you may fail the exam. But if you read the book honestly, although you may not get a high score on the test, you can at least get a score of 60.
Prince: The production team and director Wen Deguang have helped me a lot. This is true, not because of the interview I said, because they will teach me a lot of things patiently and tolerantly. The producer will teach me how to manage the risks of the subject matter, and give me a lot of creative freedom. On the set, the director will teach me how to make transitions smoother, how can you write this schedule well in the script, how to play small and how to arrange scenes, really without reservation.
The original script, the screenwriter is from 0-1, the crew is from 1-100, how to cooperate well, I think it is mutual respect and recognition. You write a play casually, and there will be hundreds of people working on your play for an afternoon, or even a day or two, then you have to be more careful and don't write a play that is not necessary. Keep everyone busy. As a screenwriter, you have to allow the director and the actors to create two or three times. This is originally a matter of teamwork. If there is no one, the play will not come out. I think it is a collective achievement.
The Paper: You also mentioned earlier that the original screenwriter "worked every day", what is the reason for insisting on this profession?
Prince: This is my means of earning a living. If I'm not a screenwriter, I don't know what to do to earn living expenses. This is the most important thing. Moreover, when writing a script, 90% of the time is painful, helpless and lonely, but 10% of the time is very happy. Although it is bitter, it also has a sense of accomplishment.
After you write it, first of all you have created a world, and that kind of self-fulfillment is still there. When the show airs, you're very happy if you can get a part of the audience to approve it. I think it's still a career worth doing overall, but if you want to do this career, you have to be prepared to "boil", at least for five, six, seven or eight years.
The Paper: As the screenwriter of this drama, what do you most hope to convey to everyone?
Prince: I want the audience to know more about the profession of doctors. Maybe what is presented in the play is indeed more beautified than reality, but at least the audience is beginning to understand it. I hope there will be more understanding between doctors and patients. Everyone always says "angels in white". It's easy to think that doctors should be perfect people in all aspects. I don't think this is very rational. Because doctors are a profession for them, just like screenwriting is a profession for me, and a reporter is a profession for you. You must first recognize that they are living people, and they will have flaws. You will get tired and you will fail.

Wang Zi studied medicine at the undergraduate level, but she considers herself a loose personality and likes to be free, especially "doesn't want to go to work", so she took the art history exam in the postgraduate entrance examination. In the second year of research, the prince was still confused about the future. He heard that there was a script competition for college students, with a prize of 20,000 yuan. The prince searched the Internet for the format of writing the script and started writing. , "For a student, this is a lot of money, and he finds that writing scripts seems like a way to make a living."However, after graduating, the prince is not a film and television major, so naturally he has no contacts in the industry, and no one takes him into the industry. At the end of 2019, the prince went to Beijing Anzhen Hospital for a period of time, and followed the doctors to work every day to observe their work and life. A director of the Cardiac Surgery Department of Anzhen Hospital also became a medical consultant for "All About Dr. Tang". In addition to experiencing life and interviewing doctors, Prince has also collected a lot of information, and screened the intractable diseases and rare cases of cardiac surgery around the world on the Internet. "It's like looking for a needle in a haystack. Which diseases, and then go to CNKI to check more detailed papers and materials on related diseases." Downloading materials cost money, Wang Zi recalled: "I charged the money when I started to check, and when I finished writing this drama, I charged it. The money is also spent." She said that the disease itself in each episode of the play is real, and the treatment plan is also real.Such a creative method is in line with the creative logic of medical industry dramas, but in the current creative environment, it is rare. In this drama, the male and female protagonists did not break the emotional window paper until the last episode to come together, which is a rare way of writing in domestic workplace dramas. The prince admitted that some people questioned the lack of emotional scenes at the beginning, but she bluntly said: "The script has so much space, you choose, do you want me to write about medical treatment or about love?" The great creative freedom also guarantees the prince's concentration on the main line of the medical plot. Therefore, the contradiction between doctors and patients, the abandonment of seriously ill children, humanitarian exemptions from surgery, and the ordering of organ donations are rarely presented in domestic medical dramas. Under the stricter review system, they are still expressed and exported. In the conversation with the prince, I can see a former medical student, thinking about the profession of a doctor, and also a young screenwriter, how to complete the persistence and compromise of self-expression in a relatively limited industry space. Tang Jiayu has no prototype
The Paper : First of all, I want to talk about the character Tang Jiayu, the heroine. Does she have a prototype in real life?
Qin Lan as Tang Jiayu
Prince: Tang Jiayu has no prototype. In reality, cardiac surgery requires a lot of physical strength. It is very common for an operation to be performed for a long time. Female doctors in cardiac surgery are rare, and it is even rarer to reach the level of the administrative director of the center. Yes, I personally have never encountered such a prototype in my life.My positioning of this character is a woman in the workplace who is both strong and vulnerable. Prince: If you want a female leader to lead a group of doctors, let her lead the three generations of male doctors. Since it is a small group, the usual drama routine is that some people are responsible for being funny, some people are responsible for blood, and some people are responsible for simplicity, and give them a point. Then I also want to write about departments that are often overlooked, such as the anesthesiology department and the medical department. They all have daily work with the surgical department, and it is also convenient to write about the relationship between the characters. So the male lead is from the anesthesiology department, and then the best friend is from the medical department. The characters' personalities also diverge from the heroine, such as Tang Jiayu and Ouyang Zhenyu, they are two sides of the same body, and even from individual perspectives, they are the same person, and "self" must be pleasing to the eye , they will definitely become friends. Tang Jiayu and Ouyang Zhenyu (played by Gao Lu)
The Paper: As a "Party B" in the industry, screenwriters will face many problems from Party A. The heroine's setting and the number of emotional dramas are the "hardest hit areas" that have been questioned. Has anyone mentioned that the heroine is too strong and not pleasing? Or too little emotional drama?Prince: No one has mentioned that the heroine is not likable enough, because we all think that the heroine is super likable. Prince: First of all, I think it is reasonable to exist. If it is written and broadcast well, I think it is also ok. This kind of big heroine in the style of Shuangwen, the routine and simplification you said may be an overkill, because the female characters on the screen in the past few years may be more virtuous and gentle, and everyone may feel a little aggrieved. So now I want to see strong women who are very strong in all aspects. It is best to be strong enough to not leak any water, and everyone will feel good enough.I think it is a bit overkill, which may flatten the characters, because flesh and blood represent a gray area of human nature, and flaws mean that this person is definitely not perfect.

The Paper: How do you view the teamwork of screenwriters and directors?Prince: The production team and director Wen Deguang have helped me a lot.
