Interview | Host Chen Beier: Our filming is also an "endless road"

Last year, the TVB-produced documentary "The Endless Road" was in the limelight. After the program was launched, it received a high score of 9.5 on Douban. The host Chen Beier's real and hearty hosting style made "The Endless Road" deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. The film won the "Moving China 2021 Person of the Year".

To be the eyes of the audience, this is Chen Beier's inner wish for the show. China's speed of poverty alleviation has amazed the world, and it has also raised doubts. The false reports of Western media made Chen Beier angry, so she decided to do her best to prove what China has done and what has really changed.

In an interview with The Paper, she always used "our villager friends" to refer to the villagers and friends she met on the journey. Coming from a big city, she did not examine the villagers with preconceived definitions, nor did she ask curious questions, or deliberately provocative, but truly integrated herself into the local environment, empathized with the villagers, and at the same time Don't be afraid to complete a simple record of a stranger in a foreign land.

Chen Beier was born in Hong Kong in 1979. After graduating from a famous school, he joined Hong Kong cable TV station. Because of his extraordinary conversation, he started a celebrity interview.

She has a work experience that made her famous in World War I: she was preparing to interview Japanese superstar Takuya Kimura. Because of the temporary schedule change, all the media left. Only Chen Beier didn't want to give up this opportunity. She chose to go to the hotel lobby and wait. Impressed each other with perseverance and patience, and got an interview opportunity. The interview made Kimura Takuya very satisfied. At the end of the interview, Kimura Takuya also hooked up with Chen Beier and agreed to let her interview him next time.

As a media person, she doesn't think she is very good for the reputation of "Infinite Road", she repeatedly mentioned her team and luck, "I graduated from the Department of Communication and Journalism, and it is my duty to report the facts. This is actually the spirit that I have always held.”

Recently, "Infinite Road 2" was launched. The second season consists of 10 episodes. A small team of 5 people started from Hong Kong and traveled to more than 10 provinces and cities across the country, including Hoh Xil in Qinghai, Xishuangbanna in Yunnan, Kunming, Dali, Chongqing, Xinjiang Urumqi, Inner Mongolia Kubuqi Desert, Zhejiang Anji, Guangdong Guangzhou, Guangxi Binyang, Hainan Sanya and other places.

This season, Chen Beier and the team have truly achieved "going up the mountain and going down to the sea".

"Going to the Mountain" was filmed in the Tianshan Mountains of Xinjiang, recording the local people's efforts to protect snow leopards; "Going to the Sea" was diving in Hainan to learn about the local protection of corals. They also went to the Yangtze River to learn how the "Yangtze River Ten-Year Banning Fishing Plan" protects the ecological diversity of the Yangtze River; they went to the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia to see how generations of people have controlled sand. They took the audience to explore the road of ecological reconstruction in China and witnessed how ordinary people protect the environment and nature by themselves.

Talking about the journey of the second season "Priceless Guarantee" that left the deepest impression on her, Chen Beier said that it was the no-man's land and guardian Sonam Dajie in Hoh Xil.

"We know that a hero is like a label. You know his deeds, but he is still high. It may be difficult for you to be on the same frequency as him, but it is rare. We found Sonam Dajie's nephew and Sonam. Dajie’s classmates, we hope that through the people around us, we can take a more three-dimensional look at such spiritual figures, and we ordinary people will feel more and feel the value of heroes.”

The protection of Tibetan antelope in Hoh Xil has been shown in various film and television works. Now, the history of blood and tears of poaching is being rewritten. With the strong support of the state and the efforts of the patrolmen and volunteers, the number of various wild animals has finally increased. The more, the local ecosystem gradually recovers... After the first episode aired, Chen Beier wrote, "The altitude is high, the scenery is beautiful, the signal is weak, but the will is strong."

Talking about the biggest feeling after filming the second season, Chen Beier was very emotional. She thought that although she was a city person, after filming this show, she really woke up.

"Our world is not just cold electronic numbers. In fact, if we step out, the world is really too wide and very beautiful. I have traveled so many places, and I feel that I have a very close relationship with nature. I really know how to cherish everything that our land has given us, yes, cherish it.”

    【dialogue】

"Infinity Road" is like a bridge

The Paper : In your opinion, what is the reason for the success of "Infinity Road"?

Chen Beier : Be able to truly move others. In the process of filming "The Endless Road", I met a lot of amazing people, and met our village friends who are very strong and are not afraid of hardships. There is also a lot of great encouragement to go to every point, only with these can we help us complete. I felt very moved along the way, because I was moved by the development of the country and the perseverance of the people. I also absorbed this energy to be able to move others.

The Paper : Is there anything that the team regrets in the first season?

Chen Beier : I have no regrets in my heart. If I have to say regrets, many viewers may feel the same. The time is too short, each episode is only 20 minutes, we shoot a lot of material, and many scenes really cannot be used in the show.

There are only 5 people in the team, including me and the camera buddy, and a girl who helps us as the mainland liaison coordinator. In this way, 5 people are on the road. Last year, they went to 6 provinces in 3 months. This year, they went even further. There are more places, and the subject matter is wider. I think it is really the strength of the team, and I am really lucky to be involved in it.

The Paper : What was the most memorable part of the first season?

Chen Beier : It's still a cliff village, after all, it's been climbing for so long!

The Paper : Last year's content was a "poverty alleviation" theme, this year is "lucid waters and lush mountains", which is actually a continuation.

Chen Beier : Yes, just like our name, the country's road to seek a happy and beautiful life for the people is an endless road, and endless resources will continue to be invested. The efforts of the people are also an endless road, because they must continue to work hard for a better life.

In the second season, we also want to say that in addition to changing the lives of this generation, it is also for the next generation and generations of people, so it must be directly related to nature and environmental ecology. This "ecological road" continues, and we will continue to explore how our country practices it.

The Paper : Site selection is still important. What is the purpose of going up and down the sea?

Chen Beier : Along the way, I saw that our country really has very rich ecological resources, and to see the challenges encountered in the sustainable development of environmental protection and how different regions face it. For example, going to the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia (also known as the Sea of Death), how is its desertification problem solved? We went to Hainan to dive into the bottom of the water to see our fight against coral bleaching, and then to explore how the Yangtze River restores fish species. We went to the birthplace of Jinshan and Yinshan in Zhejiang to see how it changed from a mining area to a beautiful scenic tourism. Area.

The Paper : Your interview is too direct and real. Did you rarely come to the mainland before, so you can feel the strong change?

Chen Beier : Doing a show is like a real trip. It's uncertain who you meet during the trip. Those are indeed my real reactions. I also hope that through the lens, the audience can have a personal feeling. Indeed, before I filmed this show, I really didn't have many opportunities to return to the mainland of our motherland, and it really only started in April last year that I had a more in-depth understanding of the current development of the country, so for me, filming "The Infinity" "The Road" also opened a door. I not only regarded it as a job, but also a very important life lesson.

In the show, my state may be similar to that of many Hong Kong viewers, but I don't have many opportunities to return to the mainland, so I don't know much about it. They (Hong Kong viewers in China) watched our program and sighed that the lives of ordinary people had changed so much. They were also moved by it, and they would say, "It turns out that the country is developing so well now that I didn't know anything before. !" So "Infinity Road" is also like a bridge to deepen mutual understanding.

We have also produced an English version for this program, and the purpose is to let foreign audiences understand how China is developing now. Through real interviews with people, we know where they lived before and where they live now. , has really changed drastically.

The Paper : You also experienced acute hypothermia during your trip to Hoh Xil. What other unexpected things happened during this trip?

Chen Beier : Hoh Xil is a forbidden area for life. Climate change is really complicated. Going to Hoh Xil at the end of May is also very cold. Originally it was sunny in the morning, but suddenly there would be snowstorms in the afternoon. The clothes were already thick, with 7 layers of clothes, and a baby warmer attached. I also wore 3 pairs of trousers, but it was still not enough, so I felt a little dizzy. I didn't feel it when I took the photo, but after getting on the bus, I felt dizzy. Fortunately, our Tibetan friends immediately sent me back to the protection station, and my body temperature slowly recovered.

In fact, the arrangements in all aspects are still very good, but there are some challenges in the human aspect. Last year, I climbed the ladder, and this year, I climbed the Tianshan Mountain. Why should I climb the Tianshan Mountain? In fact, we are going to look for a particularly rare wild animal - the snow leopard. But why is there a challenge, you still watch the show! Ha ha!

Choose this industry out of curiosity about the world

The Paper : When interviews are generally blocked, what is your solution?

Chen Beier : In line with the truth-seeking spirit of media people, no matter who the interviewee is, what should be done, I will complete it. Being a reporter is a bridge between the audience and the people we are filming, and we have to tell the audience what they don't know. We are one step ahead of them, bravely photographing things, and recording them. I understand that it is a sense of mission. Maybe there is some stupidity in our character.

The Paper : If you could choose again, would you still choose this industry? What is your original intention?

Belle Chen : Definitely. I chose this industry out of curiosity about the world. I have always been a curious person. I really want to know the things around me, and I like to make friends, because everyone has a story behind them, and everyone faces difficulties in life. How does he deal with it? You can also use these little stories to cheer up your own life.

Secondly, people in these places can also splicing a blueprint for a region, and then splicing a blueprint for national development through the splicing of various regions. This is very specific, not the data and data you see in your book. adjective. So I am very fortunate to go to different places in the way of work, and to share what I have seen and heard into a program to share with everyone. It is really very lucky for me.

The Paper : Looking back at the past, what is the biggest challenge you have experienced in your career?

Chen Beier : I often watch my own shows as an audience. I think that some of the things I can express in a different way next time will make the audience more engaged? There is room for improvement every time. I will constantly make demands on myself, so why I still like my work after so many years is because of the kind of mentality that likes to accept challenges. Generally speaking, the biggest challenge is the next challenge.

The Paper : What kind of programs do you want to try in the future?

Chen Beier : I hope to start from the story of people, so as to discover more different themes. There are so many things that can be photographed in our country, and my photography is also an "endless road". I hope that I can continue to do a good job of Chinese stories, and continue to record what everyone wants to know and what is happening. I hope I will always be on the road, haha!
