In October, the Shanghai Art Film Alliance will launch the "Retrospective Exhibition of the Works of German Film Master Ernst Lubitsch".

    Lubitsch was the most important German film director during the First World War. His comedies that showed body language and focused on visual effects had gradually become familiar to audiences since before the war. Most of his works focused on the themes of early German films. His sharp and witty writing style, wonderful and precise dialogues, and concise stories and scenes were unique at the time.

    Lubitsch was also one of the first European directors to be "imported" to Hollywood. He created a new form of comedy, using his global reach and wisdom to create comedy. This move also inspired many directors in Hollywood at that time, and they produced masterpieces one after another, creating the "Golden Age" of Hollywood (1920-1947). The famous American director Billy Wilder even regarded Lubitsch as his film mentor.

    It is worth mentioning that the films shown in this Masters Exhibition are all digitally restored versions to meet the high-standard needs of movie fans for viewing on the big screen. The three silent films in this Masters Exhibition are all equipped with Chinese embedded subtitles, making the audience more immersed in watching the films.

    1. Carmen 1918
