    What is a "good" movie?

On the eve of the 14th #BeijingInternationalFilmFestival#, I was thinking about this question...

When I think back on the (thousands of) movies I've seen in my life, I can't really name any of them as the "best".

I know a few that left a deep impression on me when I saw them (and even changed my outlook on life)… and I also know a few that still hold up to re-watching and the test of time.

Here I list my top 10 most memorable movies (sorted by year of release):

    Gone With The Wind (1939)

The two leading actors, Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, perfectly interpreted the classic characters in the story.

    MY FAIR LADY (1964)

The most successful example of a musical being adapted for the big screen.

    THE GODFATHER (1972)

You never get tired of watching this, Marlon Brando's acting is genius.

    NETWORK (1976)

Screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky anticipated the corruption of the American media as early as the 1970s.

    RAN (1985)

A masterpiece adapted from "King Lear" by master director Akira Kurosawa.

    Hibiscus Town (1986)

This masterpiece directed by Xie Jin was the first movie I watched in a theater in mainland China.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Anthony Hopkins has created one of the most unique villains in film history.

    Sense and Sensibility (1995)

Director Ang Lee presents us with the most sophisticated and moving adaptation of Jane Austen ever seen on the big screen.

    THE MATRIX (1999)

A stunning new vision... Such filmmaking is so rare.

    PARASITE (2019)

It is a bold move to turn the cruel gap between the rich and the poor into wonderful black humor.

How about you? What is your most memorable movie?
