According to data from Lighthouse Professional Edition, as of August 31, 2024, at 21:00 Beijing time, the summer movie season in mainland China (from June 1 to August 31) concluded with a box office total of 11.64 billion yuan (RMB) and the film "Grab the Doll" topping the box office with 3.25 billion yuan.
Data shows that the total number of moviegoers during the summer season in 2024 reached 285 million, with a total of 38.255 million screenings, breaking the record for the total number of screenings during a summer season in Chinese cinema history. This year's summer box office and attendance figures have significantly declined compared to the same period last year, with only two films surpassing the 1 billion yuan mark. The champion, "Grab the Doll," also set a record for the box office of comedy films during the summer season in Chinese cinema history and is presently ranked third in this year's box office chart. The second place film is "Silent Kill," which grossed 1.35 billion yuan, making it the highest-grossing suspense and crime film in mainland China this year. The third spot is occupied by the imported film "Alien: Covenant," with a current box office of 640 million yuan.
Chen Jin, a data analyst from Lighthouse Professional Edition, stated that a notable characteristic of this year's summer season is the adequate supply of films, with a diverse range of genres. As of August 30, a total of 139 films had been released during this period, matching the number released in last year's summer season. Furthermore, the scale of screenings has reached a new high, with over 38 million screenings conducted by August 30, reflecting a 10% year-on-year increase.
In terms of audience composition, as of August 30, young viewers under 25 accounted for 22.2% of the audience during the 2024 summer season, up from 21.1% in last year’s summer season, halting a rapid decline in this demographic that had persisted for several years.
Geographically, Chen Jin noted that this summer season saw a particularly strong performance in the North and Northeast regions, with cities like Dalian, Harbin, Changchun, Jilin, and Tianjin showing an increase in box office rankings compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, Shanghai continues to lead the national box office rankings and has expanded its advantage compared to last year's summer season.
