On December 3, at a preview screening of the TV series "Wind and Tide" held by the TV Drama Department of the State Administration of Radio and Television, Zou Peng, chairman of Hunan Heguang Media and chief producer of "Wind and Tide", introduced that the creation of the series started in 2018. After seven years of research, script polishing, and pre-production, the series officially started filming in March 2025. Filming took place in Jiangmen, Foshan and other places in Guangdong. The series adopts a multi-line parallel structure and presents the turbulent and dangerous anti-Japanese war in Macau from multiple levels, including political games, financial struggles, economic competition, resource grabbing and secret espionage.
Furthermore, this drama is also a tribute to the 26th anniversary of Macao's return to China, set against the backdrop of the "turbulent period" in Macao in 1941. After the fall of Hong Kong in December 1941, Macao became an important port for the transshipment and exchange of strategic materials from various countries and an international intelligence center, thus being thrust into the limelight. The Portuguese government in Macao, under the guise of "neutrality," actually allowed the Japanese army's Sawaei to run rampant as a secret service agency. He Xian, a small bank owner, moved his family to Macao and was unexpectedly drawn into the unforeseen turmoil of the underworld and politics. During this time, He Xian met the patriotic youth Qiao Yinwan, and with the encouragement and support of his wife Guo Qiwen, he joined forces with Ke Lin, a Communist Party agent stationed in Macao, Ma Wanqi, a patriotic Chinese businessman, and other patriots. With a strong sense of patriotism and responsibility, they united their compatriots and rallied the strength of Macao's Chinese community organizations, such as the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Kiang Wu Hospital, and Tung Sin Tong, to fight back and engage in a series of clever and courageous financial and trade battles against the hostile forces.
Li Zimeng, producer of the TV drama project department of the CCTV Film and Television Documentary Center, said that the drama has a rare subject matter and vivid characters, filling the gap in the subject of the War of Resistance against Japan in Macao.
Yan Jianqi, a former member of the Central Party Literature Research Office, believes that the drama has a novel perspective, solid historical facts, and a highly legendary narrative. In terms of creation, it breaks the inherent pattern of similar themes and vividly interprets the great victory of the anti-Japanese national united front and the world anti-fascist united front, as well as the role of the Communist Party of China as the mainstay in the national resistance against Japan.
Liu Wenfeng, deputy director of the Television Drama Department of the State Administration of Radio and Television, pointed out that the creation of major revolutionary-themed television dramas should continuously innovate aesthetically and focus on value resonance, ideological resonance, and emotional resonance. This drama, with its core message of conveying the shared vision of peace and justice to the world, has the foundation for achieving widespread appeal.
"Wind and Tide" is produced by China Media Group, Beijing iQiyi Technology Co., Ltd., and China Television Drama Production Center Co., Ltd., and filmed by Hunan Heguang Media Co., Ltd. It is a key drama supported by the State Administration of Radio and Television.
