"Northwest Years" primarily showcases Xi Zhongxun's journey from a poor farmer's son to a leader entrusted with significant responsibilities during the revolution. The story focuses on his mobilization of the people to establish a revolutionary base in the Shaanxi-Gansu border region, safeguarding the north and south gates of the border area, collaborating with Peng Dehuai to protect the Central Committee, correcting issues during land reform, and his extraordinary experiences and achievements during his leadership in the Northwest, addressing ethnic and religious issues, and promoting the economic and cultural development of the region, thus shaping a vivid artistic image of a man loyal to the Party, steadfast in faith, pragmatic, deeply connected to the masses, and devoted to the people.

This drama spans 25 years from Xi Zhongxun's commitment to the revolution in 1927 to his departure from the Northwest in 1952, portraying his growth, work, and life in the region. It serves as a backdrop to the grand and impactful revolutionary struggles led by the Chinese Communist Party in the Northwest, providing a panoramic view of the early struggles after the failure of the first collaboration between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, the establishment of the Shaan-Gan revolutionary base, the construction of the Shaan-Gan-Ning border area, and the active cooperation of the Northwest Bureau of the Central Committee with the strategic directives of the Party.
