Nominations for the Directors Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild Awards announced

On January 8, local time, the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) and the 77th Directors Guild of America Awards (DGA) announced the nominations, including the main creators of popular award season works such as "Anora", "Brutalism", and "Emilia Perez". Of course, compared with the award season in recent years, there are more actors and directors in 2024 who have contributed breakthrough works of different styles, so there are also many frustrated people who were not selected.

Compared with the previously announced Golden Globe Awards and other awards selected by film critics or media, the Guild Awards are more of a bellwether for the Oscars. Because the Guild Awards are voted on by film industry practitioners, there is a high degree of overlap with the Oscar judges, namely the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In addition, it is a professional award that "experts know the doorway", and has long been valued by Hollywood insiders.

Let's take a look at the Screen Actors Guild Awards first. Wicked received the most nominations, including the most important Best Ensemble, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, Best Supporting Actor for Jonathan Bailey, and Best Stunt Ensemble. Next was Nobody, which received four nominations, including Best Ensemble, Best Actor for Timothée Chalamet, Best Supporting Actress for Monica Barbaro, and Best Supporting Actor for Edward Norton. Emilia Perez and Anola both received three nominations; Conclave and The Last Dancer both received two nominations.

Surprisingly, Angelina Jolie, the star of Maria, and Nicole Kidman, the star of Little Darling, both lost the nomination. Especially Nicole Kidman won the Best Actress Award at the 2024 Venice Film Festival and the Best Actress Award at the National Board of Review for her role as a company executive who has an extramarital affair with an intern in Little Darling. As for Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, who won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama Film for I'm Still Here, she may miss the nomination opportunity because she is not a member of the Screen Actors Guild. She may still be nominated for an Oscar like Sandra Wheeler of The Judgement of the Fall in the last awards season.

In addition, Sebastian Stan performed well in both "A Different Man" and "The Apprentice" in 2024. He also won the Berlin Film Festival's Best Actor Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical Comedy Film for the former. However, his acting skills obviously failed to win enough recognition from his peers.

Let's look at the Directors Guild Awards. The five nominees for the most important Best Theatrical Film Director Award are Jacques Audiard of "Emilia Perez", Sean Baker of "Anola", Edward Berger of "The Conclave", Brady Corbett of "Brutalists" and James Mangold of "Nobody". Following the Golden Globe Awards, Denis Villeneuve, the director of "Dune 2", was not nominated again, and his Oscar nomination is probably in jeopardy. And the one who squeezed out Villeneuve was undoubtedly James Mangold of "Nobody". In addition, some people feel sorry for Jon M. Chu of "Wicked", who had previously won the Best Director Award at the National Board of Review Awards.

In addition, the above-mentioned nomination list is criticized for being all male directors. Two female directors, Coralie Farria of "Some Kind of Material" and Paral Kapadia of "Imagine Light", were not selected. Fortunately, Paral Kapadia was nominated for the Best First Cinema Film Director Award. Chinese director Wang Shengxiang was also nominated for this award for "Little Brother".

Due to the recent wildfires in Los Angeles County, California, where Hollywood is located, many activities during the award season have been affected. Originally, the nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards were supposed to be read out by guests on site, but in the end, a list was simply announced. The voting deadline and announcement time for the Oscar nominations will be postponed by two days, and will be announced on January 19. The awards ceremonies for the Directors Guild of America Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards were scheduled to be held on February 8 and February 23, respectively, and there are no changes yet.
